The composition of many eastern Australian woodland and forest bird assemblages is controlled by a single, hyper-aggresive native bird, the noisy miner Manorina melanocephala. The "Avifaunal disarry from a single despotic species" working group harnessed diverse existing datasets and used them to develop and test models of noisy miner occupancy and impacts. Two datasets are published based on the analysis and synthesis.

The fungal disease mucormycosis, caused by the fungal pathogen Mucor amphibiorum, has infected Tasmanian platypus for almost three decades (Gust et al 2009, Gust and Griffiths, 2011). The disease causes skin lesions, morbidity and mortality (Gust and Griffiths, 2009). To investigate spatial and temporal distribution patterns of mucormycosis and its impacts on platypus, a database of extensive historic platypus capture and observation records was created. This data was used to map historic distribution and prevalence of mucormycosis. In 2008-2009 live trapping surveys were undertaken to determine the spread, prevalence and persistence of the disease. In addition, demographic (sex, age), morphometric (body size) and health and moult condition of captured individuals were assessed (Gust et al 2009, Gust and Griffiths, 2011). Furthermore, influences of mucormycosis on the hematology, plasma biochemistry and other indicators of health in platypus were investigated (Geraghty et al 2011).

We conducted a four-step Delphi expert elicitation procedure. This approach allowed us to address the gaps in knowledge regarding national koala populations with the robustness of collective judgement. The four steps of the Delphi method ask for an upper estimate, a lower estimate, a best guess and a percentage confidence interval. Prior to the commencement of the workshop, the participants were required to complete the first round of the questionnaire. These results were then re-evaluated during the workshop and a second round of elicitation was conducted. The outcome of the two workshops will be a synthesis of the distribution and abundance of koalas, population trends, and a region-specific summary of threats to koalas. Peer-reviewed journal publications will be produced. The information will be used to inform researchers, managers and decision-makers to ensure that viable koala populations persist across their natural range.

Southern Murray Mallee Landscape Assessment Framework (LAF). Biodiversity planning for key species and habitats in the Murray Mallee. Models of carefully chosen species, communities and ecosystems within three landscapes of the MMLAP produced. The models will document reasoning to suggest appropriate on-ground actions within appropriate areas of the trial landscapes. Survey work to determine the current distribution and status of species, communities and ecosystems in the trial landscapes. Survey started in 2005 and is still going. The Southern Murray Mallee Landscape Assessent Framework Fieldwork (LAF) Survey is part of the Biological Survey of South Australia Program which is a series of systematic surveys conducted across the state between 1971 and the present with the broad aim of providing a baseline inventory of South Australia's flora and fauna biodiversity.
