The TERN citizen science fauna monitoring pilot project aims to collect long-term monitoring data using the TERN standard monitoring protocol for birds. In May 2021, TERN launched a citizen science project designed to monitor bird biodiversity at the Samford Ecological Research Facility (SERF) in peri-urban Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, in collaboration with Queensland University of Technology and the Samford Eco-Corridor community group. Bird monitoring is undertaken quarterly by citizen scientists using TERN standardised monitoring protocols which are based on the Birds Australia systematic bird survey ‘2 ha 20 minute search’ method.

This dataset contains audio files for TERN Boyagin Wandoo Woodland SuperSite. Long-term recordings of the environment can be used to identify sound sources of interest, characterise the soundscape, aid in the assessment of fauna biodiversity, monitor temporal trends and track environmental changes.

The site was established in 2017 at the Boyagin Nature Reserve with research plots located in Wandoo woodland (Eucalypt sp.). The core 1 ha plot is located in a dense eucalypt woodland. For additional site information, see Boyagin Wandoo Woodland SuperSite

In 2018 an acoustic recorder was set up to collect audio data for a total of 12 hours per day, split between six hours around dawn and six hours around dusk. The recording schedule aimed at capturing morning and evening bird choruses while minimizing memory and battery requirements. A long-term spectrogram has been generated for each audio file to aid in data exploration.

Data are made available through the data link. The site is in semi-arid woodland and was operated as a pastoral lease from 1907 to 2007. The core 1 ha plot is characterised by Eucalyptus salmonophloia (salmon gum), with Eucalyptus salubris, Eucalyptus transcontinentalis and Eucalyptus clelandiorum dominating other research plots. For additional site information, see Great Western Woodlands SuperSite

In 2020 four acoustic recorders were set up to collect audio data continuously as part of the Australian Acoustic Observatory (A2O) project. Two recorders were placed in relatively wet habitats and two in relatively dry habitats.

This dataset contains audio files for TERN Mitchell Grass Rangeland SuperSite. Long-term recordings of the environment can be used to identify sound sources of interest, characterise the soundscape, aid in the assessment of fauna biodiversity, monitor temporal trends and track environmental changes.

Mitchell Grass Rangeland SuperSite is located at Rosebank Station, approximately 11 km south-east of Longreach in Queensland. The site is arid tussock grassland with a variety of grass species including Astrebla lappacea and Astrebla squarrosa over black vertosol soil that supports sheep and beef cattle grazing. Long-term recordings of the environment can be used to identify sound sources of interest, characterise the soundscape, aid in the assessment of fauna biodiversity, monitor temporal trends and track environmental changes.

Tumbarumba SuperSite was established in 2000 by CSIRO and started measurements in 2001. The 1 ha SuperSite plot was established in 2015 in a collaboration with TERN. The overstorey is dominated by Eucalyptus delegatensis (Alpine Ash) and Eucalyptus dalrympleana (Mountain Gum).
This dataset contains audio files for Litchfield Savanna SuperSite. Litchfield Savanna SuperSite was established in 2013 in Litchfield National Park. Site selection was influenced by the history of long-term monitoring work undertaken in this area by the Darwin Centre for Bushfire Research (formerly Bushfires NT). The core 1 ha plot is dominated by Eucalyptus miniata and Eucalyptus tetrodonta. The site is representative of the dominant ecosystem type across northern Australia: frequently burnt tropical savanna in high rainfall areas.
This database contains occurrence data for vertebrates across the Australian Wet Tropics. Species occurrence point data has been collected during field intensive surveys using a variety of sampling methods as well as from the literature and institutional databases. The records are divided into two tables: Misc_records and STD_records. The first contains records collated opportunistically, as well as records collected from literature. The latter is a collection of standardized surveys conducted by Steve E. Williams (JCU).

All occurrences were vetted for positional and taxonomic accuracy, and for sensitivity at the state and national levels. Sensitive species records are withheld or have their location generalised following sensitive species rules for processing these records.
