The dataset consists of species identity and projective foliage cover (PFC) of ground layer vascular plants from five sites located near Mareeba, in northern Queensland. The sites are located in eucalypt communities with altitudes ranging from 380 to 840 m. Data have been collected annually since 1992, in April and May, i.e. during the annual peak of plant species richness. At each site, data collection is carried out using ten 0.5 m<sup>2</sup> quadrats deployed within a permanently marked 50 x 10 m plot. For each quadrat, all plant species visible above ground are identified and sampled. PFC data for each species from the ten quadrats are averaged. Any additional species occurring within the 50 x 10 m plot is also recorded and assigned a PFC of 0.1% (Neldner and Butler, 2021).

<p>In 1997, many very young <em>Senna</em> seedlings were noticed in the Cassia corner and outside the northern boundary fence. To study the effects of grazing on these seedlings outside the reserve, three populations were identified and measured to the north of the fence, and a fourth population just south of the fence in the Reserve, not otherwise enclosed. </p> <p>Two of the outside populations were enclosed in triangular fences, one with sheep netting to protect from grazing by sheep, the other with both sheep and rabbit netting to protect against both sheep and rabbits. A third population was left unprotected. The population inside the Reserve was assumed to be protected from all grazing by the Reserve fence. The aim was to follow the fates of the original cohort. </p> <p>This is version 2.0 of the Koonamore Senna Population data release.</p>

The data are herbage biomass (dry weight, gram per square metre) and density of trees and shrubs (number per transect) measured inside cattle-proof exclosures and on adjacent grazed areas on two sites of different soils at Kidman Springs, Northern Territory between 1973 and 2002.

In the mid-1920's Professor Theodore George Bentley (TGB) Osborn, Professor of Botany in the University of Adelaide, put forward strong scientific arguments concerning the lack of knowledge of the ecology of arid zone vegetation, and the effect of grazing on it (Osborn, 1925). In 1925 negotiations proceeded between the University of Adelaide and Messrs Hamilton Wilcox Ltd to secure a parcel of land for the purposes of research on Koonamore Station, a sheep-grazing property approximately 400 km north-east of Adelaide. A parcel of land of around 390ha was identified and fenced to exclude rabbits and other stock. The area was originally referred to as the Arid Region Flora Reserve but later was named the TGB Osborn Vegetation Reserve after its founder.
