    The project systematically surveys the extent and condition of remnant native vegetation on railway corridors / roadsides . A standard drive-by survey methodology is used to record dominant species (overstorey, understorey, emergent, threatened and alien species), structural type, density/distribution and understorey vegetation type in roadside vegetation. Mapping outputs are used to inform roadside vegetation management by Local and State Governments.

    This survey was held in the Kanowana Block between 1990 and 1992. The Kanowana Block contains a vast network of channels, lakes, waterholes irrigated by floodwaters from the south west branch of the Cooper Creek and the northern overflow from Coongie Lakes. The survey was based on the current survey methodology for flora and vertebrate surveys which were adapted to suit the wetland system. Several objectives of the project were to adopt a site-based survey to assess, classify and map vegetation of the area, to create a baseline data for future monitoring and contributing to an understanding of the wetland system. The project was also a pilot study to test approaches and techniques for vegetation survey and mapping in other desert wetland systems of the Lake Eyre basin.     The Sandy desert survey is part of the Biological Survey of SA programme run by the Biological Survey & Monitoring group in DEH. Generally standard methodology used. Survey areas defined in a DEH spatial layer managed by DEH Environmental Information Group. A modified standard Biological Survey methodology, Vegetation Mapping methodology, was used during this project at sites identified by the label prefix 'VMS'. At Vegetation Mapping Sites the dominant overstorey and understorey plant species and perennial plant species with a Braun-Blanquet cover abundance score greater than 1 were recorded. Plant height data were not recorded. Either a subset of the complete physical dataset (such as slope, aspect and landform) or no physical data were recorded.
