Purpose
A side-effect of eutrophication is the localised acidification of estuarine sediments, as the microbial respiration of excess quantities of organic matter results in increases in dissolved carbon dioxide. Such acidification can alter benthic ecosystem functions, therefore calcium carbonate was added to sediments to see whether the effects of eutrophication-induced acidification on function could be reduced via the buffering of pH by calcium carbonate dissolution.

Statement
Sediment sampling and flux measurement : Cores were used to collect sediments for analysis of sediment characteristics and macrofauna abundance and richness. Benthic incubation chambers were used to measure solute fluxes across the sediment-seawater interface.
