Statement
Litter traps: Fifteen traps were placed directly beneath tree canopies in each of four plots. Litter from all traps at each site was collected in bulk from each site, oven dried (70&nbsp;°C) and weighed. To obtain rates of litterfall per unit ground area:<ul style="list-style-type: disc;"> <li> The litter mass was divided by the total surface area of all traps (15&nbsp;*&nbsp;0.25&nbsp;m2= 3.75&nbsp;m2) then multiplied by crown cover (the fraction of ground area cover by the vertical projection of tree crowns, assuming the crown to be solid).</li> <li>The litter mass per unit ground area was divided by the time since last sampling.</li></ul> Instrument: Litter traps consisting of galvanised steel hoops with catching bags made of fly wire. <br></br>Sampling Extent and Description: The sampling began in December 2013. Fifteen traps were placed directly beneath tree canopies in each of four plots. Litter from all traps at each site was collected in bulk from each site, oven dried (70&nbsp;°C) and weighed, at approximately three month intervals.
